What is Oral Sedation?

Also known as ‘conscious sedation’, this treatment involves taking a prescribed dose of a certain sedative. This typically comes in the form of a pill and, depending on the strength, your dentist will ask you to take the medication as early as the night before the dental treatment or as late as an hour before the procedure.

What are the Effects of Oral Sedation?

Oral sedatives will make you feel relaxed and increase your pain threshold. This helps dentists administer treatments with little complication. After taking the sedative you might feel drowsy or a little nauseous, so we recommend you ask someone to drive you home once the procedure is over.

Unlike IV sedatives which can take effect almost immediately, oral sedatives can take up to an hour to start working. Although you’ll be aware of what’s happening around you and can answer questions, you will be in a dream-like daze. It’s not uncommon for patients to not remember much if any of the procedure after the effects of the oral sedatives wear off.
